'On watch - African pied kingfisher'

These lively, darting little birds are often seen in Southern Africa. Commonly they will sit motionless on a branch overhanging a stream fixing their bright eyes on the water below. Once a fish is spotted they project themselves downward like a feathered dart. When watching for prey they are very approachable and easy to observe.
